A Great Read
on Fuling!
This is an informing and beautifully written account of a Peace Corp worker's two years in Fuling (from 1996 to 1998).  Peter Hessler offers an invaluable and eloquent glimpse into the complicated, contemporary world Fuling kids are born into.
White Crane Rocks in the Yangtze River at Fuling.  The legend is that the rocks were once populated with white cranes.  Over 100 beautiful inscriptions of ancient calligraphy, drawings, and poems mark these rocks.  They will be permanently submerged when the Three Gorges Dam is finished.

What is Fuling Known for in China?

Spicy pickled vegetables!   (We're told the commercials for this Fuling delicacy air all over China, and many people can actually hum the jingle that goes with it! )  Zhacai, the green leafy cabbage/lettuce kind of plant (sorry--can't find out just WHAT it is), grows well in the entire region and makes up are large part of the agricultural yield of Fuling area.  (Over 50,000 people are needed to grow and harvest Zhicai.)  For interesting and entertaining info on Zhacai, visit
a local company's website. This page celebrates Zhacai's contribution to society by saying "Zhacai gives Fuling honor."
