| My
friend, Kim, accompanied me to China to adopt our daughter, Grace (Fu De
Li). My husband, Dave, stayed at home with our two boys. We were on the way home, on the last leg of our journey home, flying out of the Denver airport, when we realized how hungry we were. The ground crew had just announced that there would be no meal served in flight, but that we were welcome to get some food to go to eat in flight. After eating traditional Chinese food for the past 18 days, we jumped on the idea of McDonalds burgers and fries. Our daughter Grace, just 6 months, sat in the seat between Kim and I as we waited for the flight to depart. Kim placed a french fry in each of Grace's hands. What a smile Grace gave her. The flight attendant, stopped to ask about Grace. Kim has blonde hair, and mine is light brunette, Grace's jet black hair was so obviously different than ours. We explained to the flight attendant that we were on our way home from China after adopting Grace. At the Cleveland airport, Grace would meet her dad and big brothers for the first time. The flight attendant had tears in her eyes. Once we were on our way, the same attendant came by and asked if she could hold Grace. Of course we agreed. Then she proceeded to the front of the aircraft, where she held Grace up in the middle of the aisle, and explained to all the passengers, "This is Grace. She is six months old, and was just recently adopted from China. She is heading to Cleveland to meet her dad and big brothers, Evan and Kyle. We are meeting Grace before they do." The reaction from the passengers was overwhelming. Many stopped by to see us and ask questions. A few just wanted to hold her. The flight attendant offered to video tape us when we got off the plane. After all, I had our family's video camera for the trip. What a wonderful offer. There was one catch. She had to wait until all the passengers disembarked before she could leave. That meant, we would be the last ones off the plane with her. When we got to Cleveland, the co-pilot announced, "Welcome Home Grace" on the PA system. Then we got ready to meet Dad and big brothers. It was 11:30pm, just a half hour before Father's Day. When we got off the plane, we had to walk through all the gates, to the security gate where we knew our family would be waiting. Imagine our surprise when we saw a huge crowd of people waiting there, many whom we did not recognize. We then realized that most of the passengers on our flight had stopped at security to witness the union of our family with Grace. What a wonderful welcome home! |
